چکیده

— Highly variable γ-ray pulses and X-ray flares in GRB light curves can result from external shocks rather than central engine activity under the assumption that the GRB blast-wave shell does not spread. Acceleration of cosmic rays to > ∼ 10 eV energies can take place in the external shocks of GRBs. Escape of hadronic energy in the form of UHECRs leads to a rapidly decelerating GRB blast wave, which may account for the rapid X-ray declines observed in Swift GRBs.

According to the internal-external shocks model for γ-ray bursts (GRBs), the GRB is produced by internal shocks within a relativistic flow while the afterglow is produced by external shocks with the ISM. We explore the early afterglow emission. For short GRBs the peak of the afterglow will be delayed, typically, by few dozens of seconds after the burst. For long GRBs the early afterglow emissio...

Extended Power-law Decays in Batse Gamma-ray Bursts: Signatures of External Shocks?

The connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows is currently not well understood. Afterglow models of synchrotron emission generated by external shocks in the GRB fireball model predict emission detectable in the gamma-ray regime (>∼ 25 keV). In this paper, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of a subset of BATSE GRBs with smooth extended emission tails to search for...

Gamma-ray Bursts *

The origin of GRBs, bursts of 0.1 MeV—1 MeV photons lasting for a few seconds, remained unknown for over 20 years, primarily because GRBs were not detected prior to 1997 at wave-bands other than γ-rays [1]. The isotropic distribution of bursts over the sky suggested that GRB sources lie at cosmological distances, and general phenomenological considerations were used to argue that the bursts are...

On the generation of UHECRs in GRBs: a reappraisal

We re-examine critically the arguments raised against the theory that Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays observed at Earth are produced in Gamma Ray Bursts. These include the limitations to the highest energy attainable by protons around the bursts’ shocks, the spectral slope at the highest energies, the total energy released in non–thermal particles, the occurrence of doublets and triplets in the d...

Gamma-Ray Bursts - When Theory Meets Observations

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the brightest objects observed. They are also the most relativistic objects known so far. GRBs occur when an ultrarelativisitic ejecta is slowed down by internal shocks within the flow. Relativistic particles accelerated within these shocks emit the observed gamma-rays by a combination of synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. External shocks with the circumstella...
